Post-Gazette Internship – Week 2!

Monday 5/28

Happy Memorial Day! I had a nice, sunny holiday off. A few of us attended the Pirates vs. Cubs baseball game at PNC Park. PG Executive Editor David Shribman generously gave a few of the interns nice tickets for the game. Although the Pirates lost, it was still great day to enjoy the sunshine at the park!

Zach and I also met an awesome Rickshaw driver leaving the park. A previous environmental journalist who has traveled across the country, we struck up an amazing conversation. He gave us a nice ride back to our car along the river trail, a great way to end the outing!

Tuesday 5/29

On Tuesday, I worked on a really great story surrounding the unveiling of an LGBT+ decal on a new police cruiser, to be displayed in Zone 2.

The story turned out better than I thought, and seemed to do well on social media!

Wednesday 5/30

Today, I heavily developed multiple web project ideas. I constructed a detailed outline to organize thoughts and information. I also did some intense research on the best multimedia web projects throughout the past year from multiple news agencies. I’ll be able to utilize some of these design ideas for my own project.

I also did a lot of social media sharing through my own personal accounts. By sharing other journalists’ articles, I am doing my part in balancing the spread of misinformation online with true, researched stories by media professionals.

Thursday 5/31

I spent most of my day doing deep research for my big web project. No spoilers yet, though!

We also participated in a Work Place Harassment Training and a review of our Social Media Guidelines in the Crystal Palace conference room from 2:30 p.m.- 3:30 p.m.. The session was hosted by Human Resources director Linda Guest. We went over scenarios to recognize harassment and learned how to report it.

Friday 5/28

Today, I worked on a story regarding Heinz Field’s ranking as one of the best stadiums in the NFL.

I also did some research on two separate projects, details coming soon!
